TOB translator defends Christopher West

I was informed of another defense of Christopher West I thought you would be interested in reading. This one is from biblical scholar Michael Waldstein, whose new translation of John Paul II's "Theology of the Body" is considered definitive. As always, I am interested in your comments.

Norma Ann Rodriguez-Puente's Gravatar I disagree with the defense of West. His approach is very offensive and disrespectful towards women, it is to me, that is. He needs a better approach. I am sorry, but I stop referring to him way before now. He needs to speak w/more gentleness like Christ, not treat the subject like we are one of the guys. God bless.

Elizabeth's Gravatar Praise God for Christopher West! He is a wonderful evangelist of JPII's teachings. He introduced me among many other young people into JPII's teaching, which is radically different from our secular understanding. Someone who is truly stimulated will move on to the writing of JPII. I'm really taken back by the "trampling" that's happened since the Nightline appearance, which was obviously distorted to anyone who has seen this guy talk. The trampling is disturbing, and has not seemed to be done in kindness (Dr. von Hildebrand was quite harsh and uninformed, the other recent critique seemed to miss the boat on Chris West's main teachings). Anyone who has seen this guy talk will also recognize that while he is a gifted speaker, the accusation of pride is unfounded.

Ron's Gravatar I have a crazy question but if people are interest in "Theology of the Body", why don't people read the Pope's actually addresses themselves? They may be challenging but they are his actual teaching. Why take it from a Christopher West any way? I'll admit that I am with Dr. Alice von Hildebrand in her critique of West's theology but I still don't understand why people don't go to the source.

Peace of Christ to you all.

norma ann's Gravatar I believe the same - everyone should just go to the main source. These other guys are taking it upon themselves to explain JPII's teachings and they do not have a clue as to what they are working with. I am sorry, but Mr. Christopher West, was a turn off for me from day one. He has used language that JPII would have never even come close to using. He is only for like the people that are like really, really way off - I guess, way off the Church's teachings. God bless him, but he needs to target only certain groups of people.
